Introduction

Etsy fees can be a bit complex, especially at the beginning and particularly when selling physical products. If not calculated correctly, they can lead to unexpected surprises that you would probably want to avoid. In this article, we will explore the various fees on Etsy and introduce a free and customizable Etsy fee calculator for any country.

What are Etsy's commissions for each sale

Etsy charges a flat fee of $0.20 per renewed product listing, plus 6.5% of the total payment collected (including the shipping price charged to the customer). If the transaction was done through "Etsy Direct Checkout," you will have to pay additional fees of 4%, as well as regulatory processing fees of $0.47.

What types of fees does Etsy charge?

Etsy applies four types of fees, including VAT on each. These fees include product listing fee, transaction fees, payment processing fees, and advertising fees.

Listing fees explained

Listing and renewal fees for your product listings are the costs associated with selling your items on Etsy. For each listed item, Etsy charges a fee of $0.20, whether it sells or not. These fees cover a 4-month period. If your item sells during this period, the product listing will be automatically renewed for $0.20, extending it for an additional 4 months. Even if your item doesn't sell, it will be automatically renewed after 4 months for the same $0.20 fee.

If a customer purchases multiple units of the same product in a single transaction, you will need to pay listing fees of $0.20 per unit. For instance, if a customer buys 5 units of the same item, renewal fees of $0.90 will be charged to you for that transaction.

What to do if a product doesn't sell?

In my personal strategy, I keep a product for 4 months. If I don't get any sales, I try to improve and optimize it, then give it another chance (4 months). If I still don't get any sales after these 4 months, I delete the product listing.

What are the transaction fees on Etsy?

Next, we have Etsy transaction fees. Etsy charges 6.5% based on the total price you charge your customer for an item, including shipping, personalization, and gift wrapping. Let's say you sell a product for $50 and charge $7 for shipping and $3 for gift wrapping. Etsy will deduct 6.5% from $60 ($50 + $7 + $3), which amounts to $3.9 in transaction fee.

What are the payment processing fees on Etsy

When it comes to payment processing fees, Etsy sellers have two main options: Etsy Payments and PayPal. Etsy Payments charges between 3% and 4% (depending on your country) per transaction, while PayPal charges 2.9% plus $0.25 per transaction. It's important to note that fees may vary slightly based on your country of residence.

What is the difference between Etsy ads and Etsy offsite ads

What are Etsy ads?

Let's now talk about advertising fees. Etsy offers two types of advertising: Etsy Ads and external ads. Etsy Ads is an optional service that operates on a pay-per-click model, meaning the price varies based on keywords and demand. You can set a maximum daily budget to control your advertising expenses. What are Etsy's offsite ads?

On the other hand, Etsy's Offsite Ads program has been in place since early 2020. It is enabled by default, but sellers generating less than $10,000 per year can opt out. However, if you earn more than $10,000 per year, activation is mandatory. The fees for offsite ads vary based on your earnings. If your earnings are less than $10,000 in the last 365 days, 15% of all sales generated via offsite ads will be charged. If your earnings are $10,000 or more, the fees are reduced to 12%.

If you sell digital products, I recommend keeping it enabled, however if you sell physical products, I recommend disabling it.
