Introduction to Etsy niche Research

Etsy is the marketplace made up of millions of independent sellers, offering countless sales opportunities globally. Standing out from the crowd can sometimes be challenging.

In this article, I will explain how to find high-potential niches, but always keep in mind that you should think in terms of audience rather than niches. Thinking only in terms of niche will limit you in developing your shop.

With a vast market, finding the ideal niches can seem daunting. But don't worry! In this article, we provide a simple and comprehensive process to help you discover the best Etsy niches. A free Etsy niche analyzer is also included at the end of the article.

Is your Etsy niche idea competitive?

The first step to finding a profitable niche is to examine the Etsy search results for at least five relevant keywords to find low competition Etsy niches. If you see fewer than 10,000 results, it means there isn't much competition.

If the range is between 10,000 and 30,000, it's still interesting. But if the number exceeds 30,000, the market is starting to become competitive. Let me give you an example: when I launched my first Etsy shop (POD on t-shirts and sweatshirts), there were around 300,000 search results for my niche. In contrast, my second Etsy shop had only about 3,000 search results. Logically, it was much easier to grow my second shop.

Take a deeper look at your competition

Once you have completed the previous step, it's time to delve deeper into the results. Take a closer look and ask yourself: are there any products that should not be included in the search results? Is there a significant diversity of products in your niche?

For example, in my third Etsy store, I sell Notion Templates. When I first analyzed the niche, I got 7,000 search results. Among these results, I noticed something interesting. There were a number of digital planners, indicating that the Notion Template niche was not so competitive at the time.

Another observation was the limited variety of products. Most sellers offered similar Notion templates, such as the "Notion Life Planner" and the "Notion Finance Planner." This lack of diversity increases the level of competition in the niche markets.

Check the demand for your Etsy niche

Discovering a niche with little competition is a good start, but it's only half the battle when it comes to finding the best Etsy niches. The other half? The demand. It is crucial to assess whether there is a demand for the niche you are interested in. To do this, you can use a software called Everbee. They offer a free plan.

Your goal is to assess the number of products sold for bestsellers. If bestsellers have only been sold 20 to 40 times, it indicates low demand.

Conversely, if multiple products sell over 100 times per month, it signifies high demand. Another effective way to test demand is to list a few products while ensuring they are of good quality, have attractive thumbnails, and are SEO optimized.

If you start receiving favorites or, better yet, making sales in less than two weeks, it's a clear sign of potential in this niche. That's how I discovered my niche for my second Etsy store.

Do these findings impact your Etsy strategy?

In a word: yes. When you decide to delve into a low-competition niche, you'll need to approach it differently than a highly competitive one.

According to some Etsy sellers it usually takes the algorithm 4 to 8 weeks to fully grasp what you're offering, and this timeframe can be influenced by the level of competition in your niche. So, don't expect immediate sales on day one. In my experience with my second shop, I spent 3 to 4 days researching until I found my niche.

At that time, there were only 3,200 Etsy search results (now 30,000) for the main keywords. I also noticed some demand, bestsellers were selling well, and when I created my first products, I quickly got my first sales and favorites. I didn't waste time and seized this opportunity, and guess what? I started making consistent sales fairly quickly, without using Etsy ads.

By the end of the first month, I had already made €400 in sales. Fast sales are entirely achievable when operating in a low-competition niche. Certainly, timing plays a role, but it's not the only thing that matters. Even in a saturated niche, if you have a high-quality product, attractive mockups, and solid SEO, you can still achieve positive results. However, you'll need to be more patient and adopt a different strategy, such as using Etsy ads.

What I would do today

To succeed quickly on Etsy marketplace, there is a standout strategy: target niches with low competition and decent demand. As previously explained, this strategy proved successful for my second Etsy shop, giving me a significant edge moving forward. I worked hard to grow rapidly in this niche, garnering numerous positive reviews quickly. I swiftly became a top choice in this niche, and today, thanks to my past performance and Etsy ads, I manage to stay in the top 5 of my niche despite increased competition. So, timing really matters on Etsy.

Furthermore, I now think in terms of audience and no longer limit myself to just one niche. I now offer new products in other niches that my audience might find interesting. The best way to succeed is to find profitable niches tailored to a specific audience with a style they appreciate.
